The second part of our look back through 2021 covers the second half of the year, and this may stretch to an epic length as the lifting of restrictions and reopening of many of our attractions meant we had so much to be happy and thankful for. So sit back, maybe this time with one of our delicious pork pies (or a vegan alternative from the Golden Mile) and enjoy our look through Summer and Autumn.
July
We released the first video in our Uncover The Story campaign, looking at the history and heritage of Leicester, from Richard III through to our historic restaurants and museums. This came alongside a special launch event at the King Richard III Visitor Centre where representatives from the City and County Council joined with organisations and attractions from across Leicestershire to formally launch the campaign.
July also saw the reopening of the best way to get lost in the Leicestershire countryside. Wistow Maze is a huge corn and maize field and every year they come up with a fantastic new design for visitors to explore. This year’s maze was in the shape of a Phoenix, to symbolise the rebirth of our region as we came out of lockdown... both beautiful and poetic.
August
Summer in the City brought life back to Leicester and gave us so much to remember. From the inflatable Luminarium maze to a beach on Humberstone Gate and daily street activities and performances. Not to mention the amazing Rocket Round Leicester art trail... there was always something to do.
As we explored and reconnected, local poet Jess Green and actor Jassa Ahluwalia came together to create the amazing the Let The Light in poem and performance. Watch below...
August saw Leicester City Football Club unveil plans for a huge expansion to their stadium and the surrounding area. The upgrade will see capacity increased to 40,000, a new hotel, entertainment arena and fanzone, along with a brand new fanstore. The first phase, the expansion of the stadium is likely to complete in summer 2024.
September
We challenged you to get out and about with our Uncover The Story Market Towns video. Taking in some of our most beautiful county towns, the video travels from the pork pie shops of Melton Mowbray in the east of the county all the way to the great apes of Twycross Zoo in the west. Then it takes you from the shoppers’ paradise of Market Harborough in the south to the stalls of Loughborough market in the north.
Yarnbombing is all the rage right now and the beautiful village of Cosby went all out this summer as they bedecked houses, pubs, street signs and bushes with some amazing creations. There was some incredible talent on display, including this mindblowing Harry Potter installation on their community church.
The University of Leicester began the celebration of their centenary this year, marking 100 years since the first students crossed their threshold. We wrote a short piece to commemorate this, and you can read it here.
October
The Triumph Factory Visitor Experience hosted the premiere of the new James Bond film No Time To Die and we were lucky enough to be there. Two of the bikes used in the film now joined the others in their collection which has been used in films including The Great Escape and Mission Impossible.
Also in October we launched our new National Forest video. Focusing on the beautiful landscapes, historic buildings and fantastic outdoor adventures available around the area, this sums up the sheer beauty of the Leicestershire countryside.
As the month ended and spooky season arrived, it seemed that everyone in the county got involved, with scare trails everywhere from Belvoir Castle to Whatton House and Twycross Zoo looking to frighten you out of your wits. Even Foxton Locks got in on the act as they decorated the iconic uphill lock system with loads of pumpkins.
November
After a year away, it was a pleasure and privilege to see Diwali celebrations back in the city. The usual celebrations were slightly changed, with large screens up on Belgrave Road to help the community mark the festival, and the skies above Leicester were lit up with an amazing ‘Global Rainbow’.
Thousands of people came along to a carefully distanced Abbey Park to see the return of Leicester’s buggest and best firework display. As the Diwali rainbow hung over the city the crowds oohed and aahed to the explosive fun.
And as November drew to a close we had one of our own in the final of The Great British Bake Off. Inspired during lockdown to try out baking, we all watched Leicester’s Chigs Parmar take the most incredible journey from beginner baker to reaching the last three of the country’s premier food competition! We couldn’t have been more proud!
December
If you haven’t seen this frankly ADORABLE Lego recreation of New Walk, then make sure you do! Designed by Lego creator Marcos Garavelli, this received the 10,000 votes necessary to be featured on Lego Idea’s 10k Club. You can read the interview with him here.
The first snow of winter made an appearance and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect, with our Christmas lights completing the wintry scene to perfection. Families flocked to the city centre to enjoy the wintry weather and revel in the festive surroundings.
And we finish off our look back through 2021 with our fourth (and final, for now) video in the Uncover The Story campaign. Our city video is a vibrant, exciting and colourful celebration of everything that makes our city amazing. From awesome art, out of this world exhibits and terrific theatre to the incredible shopping experiences and places which make Leicester truly unique.
