As we crash into 2024 there’s loads happening around Leicester and Leicestershire, and we’ve got the rundown of everything that’s going on, so let us take you on a journey through events, music, exhibitions, theatre and sport for January and February.

Leicester Comedy Festival

We have to start with this, it’s one of the highlights of Leicester’s cultural calendar, it’s one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world and it brings household names to our city almost every night of its three week run.

Running from 7th-25th February, we’ve put together some highlights of the festival right here, and you can also head to the Comedy Festival website to browse through the 700+ shows that make up this year’s festival plus the UK Kids Comedy Festival. There’s definitely something for everyone.

Museums and Exhibitions

At Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, take a look at our city with new eyes as Leicester Vistas showcases artworks from the museums collection alongside photographs from Leicester City Council's archive. While you’re there, take a look at This Golden Mile, a love letter to the area around Melton Road, created by Leicester-based artist Kavi Pujara, who has documented the people and homes of the residents surrounding this famous road.

Paint x Pixel Subway Art. As a precursor to the Bring the Paint Festival in May, Bring the Paint and MBD bring an exciting and immersive journey into the world of graffiti and subway art to Leicester Museum with Paint x Pixel, open from 3 February. Over at Newarke Houses, Popping to the Shops is a new and exciting project dedicated to the people of Narborough Road. It aims to tell their stories of living and working in this most diverse and bustling area of Leicester. It opens on 26 January.

'Arcadia for All? Rethinking Landscape Painting Now' is a new exhibition coming to Attenborough Arts Centre from The Stanley & Audery Burton Gallery at the University of Leeds that raises pertinent questions about who has access to nature, where and how. It’s running until 28 January. And now on across the city centre is Re/thread, a giant sequin trail is taking over the windows of 10 shops. Created by local schoolchildren, this is a great way to celebrate creativity.

Theatre and stage

January can be a glum time, so it’s perfect for some theatrical escapism. Step into the comedic romantic world of April in Paris at the Little Theatre, running from 22-27 January. Over in Loughborough, the coat of many many colours comes to the Town Hall from 23-27 January with a production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Take a step back in time with this stage production of the 1970s classic comedy The Good Life. Margot, Jerry, Tom and Barabara will be on stage at the Little Theatre from 5-10 February. The drama continues, this time more seriously, at Curve with a stage production of My Beautiful Laundrette from 17-24 February. The show, based on Hanif Kureshi’s novel, tackles cultural conflict, gender equality, class and generational strife, backed with a funky 80s soundtrack.

It’s the perfect time of year for a feel good musical, and Curve has some absolute classics coming your way. Sister Act is the big January show (31 January-10 February), and you’ll be dancing in the aisles as this brand new production of the Broadway and UK award winning musical comes to town. With original music by Tony® and 8-time Oscar® award-winner Alan Menken and songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco. Jesus Christ Superstar is packed full of absolute bangers and it’s the big show at Curve from 12-17 February. Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, this reimagined production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

Winner of Best New Musical (What’sOnStage Awards 2023), the West End smash-hit Bonnie & Clyde is taking Curve by storm for three nights from 22-24 February following two hell-raising seasons in London.

Music

Experience Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon in the Space Centre (20 Jan), 10 tracks from the seminal album set to mind altering visuals in the UK’s largest Planetarium. Join the Burns Night Ceilidh (25 Jan) in the Guildhall as you enjoy an evening of energetic music and traditional Scottish dancing! The Classic Rock Show (25 Jan) at De Montfort Hall is always a fun packed and rocking occasion, with everything from AC/DC to ZZ Top.

And there’s three very different events happening too. 2Funky is one of the city’s top R&B , Hip Hop, Reggae and roots music venues and they’re celebrating their 27th birthday which a huge bash on 27th January. Two of the stalwarts of 1980s music Go West and Wet Wet Wet are co-headlining a show at De Montfort Hall on 30th January. You can get your tickets here. And finally British Folk legends Fairport Convention are coming to play Loughborough Town Hall on 16 February. You can expect a mix of long-established Fairport favourites and some surprises from albums throughout their entire career. Tickets are available here.

Sporting Leicester

Running until the 21 January, the World Snooker Grand Prix comes to Leicester’s Morningside Arena. You will be able to watch stars of the game including Judd Trump, Ding Junhui, Mark Williams and the Jester from Leicester Mark Selby! Check availability here.

Leicester Tigers are going to be taking on Leinster in the Champions Cup on the 20 January. Both teams are former winners of the European trophy, and Leinster have one of the most star-studded squads in rugby, with Irish internationals galore. Tickets are selling fast and it’s likely to be a sell-out.

Leicester City are currently riding high in the Championship and they will be taking on Ipswich Town at home in a top of the table clash on the 22 January. More info here.

Very interesting entertainment and festivals. I always attend such events because they fill our lives with positive emotions. In addition to entertainment, I also love gambling games and recommend them to many, as it is a great way to distract oneself from everyday worries. Most often, I do this online at casino not on Gamstop, which are easy to find at https://notgamstop.com/, an excellent service with reviews of such online platforms. All you need to do is visit and choose what will suit your preferences. The variety of entertainments makes our lives more interesting and fulfilling.
