Leicester’s Old Town area enjoyed worldwide fame following the discovery of King Richard III in a car park.
Its attractive streets contain some of the city’s historic and cultural gems, including the King Richard III Visitor Centre, the medieval Guildhall and, of course, the final resting place of the Last Plantagenet King at Leicester Cathedral.
There’s so much to see that you’re bound to work up an appetite and Leicester’s Old Town boasts a fantastic choice of coffee shops, tea houses, bars and restaurants.
Treat yourself to a decadent range of authentic Italian desserts at Gelato village, and a mouth-watering menu on offer at Mrs Bridge’s Tea Rooms, built in 1723.
For vegetarians, the World Peace Café on historic Guildhall Lane is a relaxing place to eat, or why not grab a snack and go al fresco in Cathedral Gardens?
To escape the hustle and bustle completely, take a short walk and discover the remains of the city’s medieval defences at Castle Gardens, an oasis of calm on the banks of the River Soar.
For shopping, the Old Town is the historic heart of Leicester City Centre and a treasure trove of independent stores. You’ll find everything from gifts and houseware to designer fashionwear and jewellery, and a visit to Cocoa Amore is a perfect way for chocolate lovers to top-off their visit.
