Diwali Festival
Leicester’s virtual Diwali celebration will help bring people together for an experience they can share with loved ones and friends wherever they are in the world. Hosted by BBC Radio Leicester’s Kamlesh Purohit the celebration features new music, storytelling and dance that have been specially filmed for this event plus performances and footage of the spectacular firework displays from previous years.
If you are having any issues with the live video, please try refreshing the page. Alternatively, you can head over to the Festivals & Events Facebook Page and view the live stream there.
We hope you enjoy our hour-long programme that combines the important religious elements of the festival with an exciting package of entertainment, featuring local artists and performers. There’s plenty of tradition, with favourites such as classical Indian dance and sitar music, but there’s also a contemporary twist to this year’s programme. Nupur Arts have created a contemporary Bollywood dance routine – and there’s an exciting tabla and drum & bass performance from Leicester artist Hari Trivedi. Plus there is story-telling, brought to life with shadow puppets, and a spotlight on the art of Rangoli – while the traditional religious ceremony, and the lighting of the diva lamp, is led by the Leicester Hindu Festival Council.
And while the city council won’t be organising fireworks this year, footage of the spectacular displays from previous years will bring the virtual event to a dramatic close. To complement our virtual Diwali programme there’s also a stay at home activity pack with lots of activities to keep the whole family entertained. You can also download An Indian Summer's Fantastic Diwali pack, with mazes, art, puppets & prizes to be won!
