International Women’s Day is a global celebration honouring the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women. Leicester is proud to have one of the leading lights of the Suffragette movement, Alice Hawkins commemorated in statue form in Green Dragon Square and continues to celebrate the achievements of women to this day.

This year there are loads of events celebrating the contributions of women to our city, whether that’s through activism, art, music or thinking. This year there's more events than ever to get involved with. Read on to find out more!


International Women’s Day Poetry Workshop and Performance with Jess Green

When: 8 March from 2pm

Where: Leicester Central Library

Join award-winning poet Jess Green for an interactive poetry workshop. Explore themes of empowerment, identity, and resilience through the art of words. Later in the day, Jess will perform her powerful poetry, celebrating the strength of women’s voices.

Unglamorous Music Presents International Women’s Day 2024

After gaining national acclaim the Unglamorous Punk movement invites you to an evening of live music, spoken word performances, and artistic expressions. Celebrate the talent and resilience of female punk artists as they take the stage at Firebug.

100 Black Women Who Have Made a Mark

When: 8 March at 6pm

Where: Serendipity, 1st floor, 21 Bowling Street, Leicester, LE1 6AS

Celebrating the stories of black women who have made a positive change across the arts, education, technology, science or community activism, this roundtable conversation is a chance to hear from five visual artists working on a project due to be unveiled this October for Black History Month.

Where: The Donkey on Welford Road

Day 2 of the Unglamorous International Women’s Day Weekender comes to the Donkey. Experience nine all female punk bands playing original songs celebrating IWD and raising funds for LOROS.

Alice Hawkins: Suffragette – A Talk by Great-Grandson Peter Barratt

Where: Newarke Houses Museum

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, Alice’s great grandson Peter Barratt and actress Ruth Pownall reprise their sell out Edinburgh Fringe spoken word show FOR FREE! They give a stirring account of the famous Leicester suffragette’s hard-fought campaign for women’s right over 100 years ago.

Unglamorous Punk Mums at Attenborough Arts

When: 10 March at 7pm

Where: Attenborough Arts Centre, Lancaster Road, Leicester, LE1 7HA

Celebrate and remember original Punk Mum and Unglam founder Ruth Miller. Tonight Boilers plus more bands play their own songs – loud, proud, funny as hell. The Unglamorous movement has swept through Leicester getting women into bands and onto stages. Come along for the free Unglamorous women's workshop from 5.30pm and have a go on guitar, bass, drums or keyboards.

Delve into Leicester’s suffragette history with Jess Jenkins and the Leicestershire Industrial History Society. Learn about the courageous women who fought for equality, voting rights, and social change. This insightful talk provides a glimpse into the lives of suffragettes and suffragists who left an indelible mark on our city.
