Out with the old and in with the new as we bid farewell to 2018 and welcome 2019. It’s the time of the year where we all take stock to reflect on another year gone by and commit to New Year’s resolutions. Most will be focused on eating more healthily, drinking less and getting in shape. Wow…that’s a lot of promises to keep, but not to worry as we have plenty of ideas to help you stick to your resolutions at the same time as experiencing the highlights in Leicester throughout the month of January.

Who needs alcohol when there are so many more healthy alternatives!  Why not join the thousands partaking in ‘Dry January’ to give the old liver a bit of space! It’s not as difficult as you might think with plenty of bars offering non-alcoholic alternatives in Leicester, so you won’t feel like you’re missing out.

Visit Manhattan 34 located in the trendy Cultural Quarter of Leicester and enjoy a ‘Peanut Buddha’ consisting of peanut butter, cream, sugar syrup, sesame oil and safflower. Sounds delicious right?? Or how about the stylish 33 Cank Street situated in St Martins’ Square with out-of-this-world non-alcoholic concoctions including their ‘Buddhist So Tasty’. 100% taste and no hangover cure required!

If like most people you’ve over-indulged and the jeans are feeling a bit too snug around the waist, you might be looking for healthy alternatives to eating out. You might think you can’t eat out without extra calories, but that’s where you’d be wrong. The World Peace Café offers a brilliant variety of vegetarian food at its Buddhist centre café and not only can you taste great food, but you’ll be able to enjoy some time to yourself in peace and tranquillity…much needed after a busy Christmas period and a great way to start the New Year!

The Good Earth offers a menu full of good, wholesome vegan and vegetarian food with 100% taste and 0% guilt! If you’re looking to some spice in your life, then how about the authentic South Indian Shivalli located on Welford Road.

We’ve covered the healthily eating options and where to go if you want to drink less, but what about boosting your levels of fitness? If you’re the type of person who can’t commit to the gym don’t worry, as there is so much to do around Leicester to encourage you to get fit and all without a gym membership in sight.

How about a Parkrun which take place at parks across the city including Braunstone and Victoria Parks? Every Saturday at 9am runners across the city take part in a 5km run. Now that’s the prefect way to start your weekend! Or if you’d much prefer a family run, take the kids to Aylestone Park at 9am Sunday morning.

If running is too strenuous and you’re looking for a more leisurely way to get fit, perhaps a walk in one of the scenic parks across Leicester and Leicestershire is more your thing! Abbey Park, Bradgate Park and Leicester’s riverside offer breath-taking views with a little pinch of peace and tranquillity – what better way for a fresh new start!

If cycling is more your thing Leicester has plenty to offer. Leicester Cycle Circuit offers riders of all ages and ability the opportunity to learn to ride, train and race at a purpose-built facility.

With all these activities we’re not sure you’ll have time to shop, but how could we end this article without a round-up of the best places to bag a bargain or two in Leicester. We’ve got it all from well-known high street retailers like John Lewis, Apple, Debenhams, Pandora and the newly opened Zara at the High Cross. A few steps away at the Haymarket Shopping Centre you’ll find names like H&M, TK Maxx and The Entertainer. If you’re looking for a more leisurely way to shop why not stroll over to The Lanes and the independent shops of St. Martin’s Square.

Wowsers…that all sounds exhausting! If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and make a fresh new start then how about a fresh brew of steaming hot coffee. You’ll be spoilt for choice with so many places to choose from. Watch the world go by…New Year’s Resolutions can wait for a few more days!
