Food & Drink

Stilton and Red Leicester cheeses and the pork pie are the three most famous contributions to English cuisine from Leicestershire and earned the market town of Melton Mowbray the title “Rural Capital of Food”.

The city has its own claims to fame too, being a former UK Curry Capital and currently home to the second highest number of Indian restaurants per capita in the world outside India, with an incredible 234 eateries cooking up a veritable feast for curry-lovers.  You won’t just find your run-of-the-mill ‘Indian’ restaurant food here, so be prepared for new taste sensations and if you don’t know your halwa from your chakri, friendly advice is always on hand.

Leicester’s foodie scene is as diverse as its people, with residents hailing from over 50 countries across the globe. You can find dishes from every corner of the earth, either in one of the many restaurants or as part of the new street food trend with trucks, cantinas and markets popping up everywhere.

The area also knows how to do fine dining too! Experience exquisite farm to table dishes at John’s House – the county’s fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant. Leicestershire restaurants regularly top the bill in the national Food Awards England including the top prize of Restaurant of the Year.

There are other ways to enjoy our food and drink offer though, we invite you to watch our craft beer being brewed and even make our famous pork pies for yourself.  Join a gin academy at one of the many gin distilleries in the area to make your own bespoke gin, take a tour of Rothley Wine Estate followed by a tutored wine tasting or sign up for a brewery tour at the new Everards Brewery (family run since 1849) or Round Corner Brewing (who recently won the title Best Ale in the World at the International Brewing Awards in 2021) finished off by a beer tasting session. You can take a masterclass in pie making at Brockleby’s, become a cheese connoisseur with a tasting at the Melton Cheese Board or improve your baking skills in the School of Rural Food under the expert guidance of a celebrity baker.
