New staircase for New Walk Museum & Art Gallery
Our new staircase and first floor lift are now open alongside our new Splendours of the Subcontinent exhibition and first floor galleries (which include World Arts exhibition, Picasso Ceramics, Arts and Crafts and German Expressionist displays).

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester's original museum has wide ranging collections and displays spanning the natural and cultural world.

A family friendly day-out, the galleries include Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs, Wild Space, gallery for the under 5s -The Den, our Victorian Art Gallery featuring works from our fine art collection and a Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery.

The first floor galleries include World Arts, the Arts & Crafts Gallery, Picasso Ceramics: The Attenborough Collection and Leicester's internationally renowned German Expressionism collection.        

Our temporary exhibitions feature works from our collections, touring exhibitions from National Museums and a programme of contemporary art and craft exhibitions.
The museum also offers a range of events from curator's talks to lunchtime concerts, visit our events pages to see What's On this month. Tours of the museum are also available for groups, please contact the museum for further details and availability.

The museum also has a Gift Shop offering a range of exhibition merchandise and contemporary craft and design and a Costa Coffee shop with free Wi-Fi available.

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery is also licensed for weddings, civil ceremonies, renewal of wedding vows, naming ceremonies and private hire. 
New Walk Museum & Art Gallery originated in 1849 when the Literary and Philosophical Society formally presented to the town its various collections, which have grown and developed over the last 160 years into one of the premier museums and art galleries in the East Midlands.

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery has been the inspiration for many people including one of the world's most influential art dealers Anthony d'Offay and Lord Attenborough and Sir David Attenborough, who pursued their love of art and natural history as a result of spending their formative years as regular visitors to the museum.

* Please note the Please note, the Victorian Art Gallery is closed during lunch time concerts. To check on specific times, please contact the museums reception.

** Please note due to staff training the museum will open at 11am on Thursday 10 August, 14 September, 12 October, 9 November and 14 December.

Free admission (small charge for certain activities on event days).

Visiting/directions to the museum:
New Walk Museum & Art Gallery is approximately ten minutes walk from Leicester City Centre and Leicester train station and accessed along the pedestrianised New Walk.

There is a small car park situated next to the museum including two parking bays for Blue Badge holders, though due to demand, availability of parking cannot be guaranteed, particularly on event or concert occasions. On street pay and display parking is also available at the back of the museum.

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery has full access for disabled visitors with a lift to the first floor galleries and a accessible toilet. Please note Gallery 6 has a small stage area for step access only.

There is provision for two parking bays for Blue Badge holders in the museum car park. The museum also has available a wheelchair for loan during the visit to the museum (please contact the museum in advance to ensure availability).
