Leicestershire Prisoners of War in the Far East

VJ 75 – Leicestershire Prisoners of War in the Far East, 1941 - 45

About

VJ 75 – Leicestershire Prisoners of War in the Far East, 1941 - 45

Opening on the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, when Japan agreed to surrender and end World War Two.

The war in the Far East has always been less well known than the war in Europe but many Britons made great sacrifices in Burma and elsewhere.

This display explores the personal stories of men of the Leicestershire Regiment and other local people caught up in these campaigns. Many ended up as prisoners of war, suffering great hardships but also showing a remarkable will to survive.

Exhibits include a chess set made by a prisoner of war, as well as photographs, medals and other mementoes.
