Scott Bennett: Stuff (Work In Progress)

A show about stuff, society and design.

Before being a Comedian, Scott worked for over a decade as a Product
Design consultant. He’s designed everything from plant pots to power
tools and he’s won awards for doing so. However, it was a highly
pressurised job and everything he ever did was constantly scrutinised
and criticised, boy was he glad to leave that world behind.

He still loves things though, and he’s not alone. As a society we just
love stuff. We turn on tech and tech turns us on. Whether it’s the
latest phone, car or coffee maker, we just can’t get enough. These
things aren’t just products, they are a statement about who we are.

For the last thirty years society has been swept up on this wave of
materialism and with the rise of the influencer, it’s only gaining pace.
This message is at odds with the looming environmental crisis, one that
threatens our very existence. The recent Covid pandemic has also changed
the balance of our lives. We’re now in a struggle to take back control,
to focus on what’s important, the tangible things that bring us real joy
and nourish the soul. It’s all about family, relationships, nature, and
having time to think. The problem is our love of stuff is getting in the
way.
