About

Polish Diaspora in Leicestershire '100 Stories in 100 Words'

As part of the Polish Independence Centennial celebration, Project Polska is launching an initiative called "Poles in East Midlands: 100 STORIES, 100 WORDS" encouraging Polish diaspora past and present, to share their unique stories and experiences.

These stories will range from profile of inspirational individuals, community traditions, places to memorable events.

The first phase of the initiative will be focusing on Leicestershire, and it will feature 25 stories from local community. The remaining stories will be collected across East Midlands, and published throughout the year, exploring the richness and diversity of Poles in the region and their contribution to local community.

This oral heritage initiative is led by volunteers, and aims to use the power of untold stories to connect and revitalise the community.

The event is part of a serial of events during Polish Heritage Day celebration which aims to promote and celebrate Polish culture, heritage of past generations and the positive contribution made by the million members of the Polish diaspora to the cultural, economic and social life in the United Kingdom, as part of the Day of Poles Abroad and the Flag Day celebrated on 2nd May as well as the 3rd of May Constitution Day.

The national initiative was launched last year by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London, Ambassador Arkady Rzegocki, which saw around 50 initiatives and 25,000 people take part.

This second edition of Polish Heritage Day (PHD), with this year's theme being 100 years of Polish independence, being held on 5th-6th May 2018.

His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent has decided to extend his patronage to this year's Polish Heritage Day.
