New Ancient Egyptians Gallery

About

New Ancient Egyptians Gallery

New Walk Museum and Gallery now hosts the most significant collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts in the East Midlands.

The collection includes finds from archaeological excavations carried out in the very early 20th century, as well as mummies sent to Leicester from Egypt by John Mason Cook – the son of the travel pioneer Thomas Cook.

Thanks to the DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, over 400 objects from this collection will be redisplayed over two galleries on the first floor of the museum.

These new galleries, entitled Life and Death in Ancient Egypt, will allow the museum to display nearly three times more Egyptian artefacts than are currently on display. The new galleries will showcase objects that illuminate all aspects of the fascinating lives and deaths of the ancient Egyptians and for visitors to not only learn about the tombs and mummies of ancient Egypt, but also about the vibrant lives that these ancient peoples led.

Look out on the Leicester Museums facebook page for the latest news on the new gallery and events programme.
