Nérija - DMU Black History Month Series

DMU Music is proud to introduce their Black History Month Series of International Jazz in collaboration with Serendipity and Leicester Jazz House

Opening the series on Friday 12 October is Nérija: a collective of all female London-based musicians playing exciting and original music inspired by Jazz, Hip Hop, Afrobeat and South African Township. Consisting of Sheila Maurice-Grey on trumpet, Rosie Turton on trombone, Cassie Kinoshi on alto sax, Nubya Garcia on tenor sax, Shirley Tetteh on guitar, Inga Eichler on double bass and Lizy Exell on drums.

Nérija have toured across Europe in such places as Norway and Germany, and have played alongside top UK jazz musicians such as Nathaniel Facey of Empirical and Zoe Rahman. They are the winners of Jazz Newcomer Parliamentary Jazz Award 2017 and Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year 2016 nominees.

Meeting through a Tomorrow's Warriors Development program, Nérija began from an initiative created to specifically address the imbalance in the number of women achieving success in the music industry. Recent performances include UK festivals Love Supreme, Latitude, Brainchild, Manchester Jazz Festival and Jazz Re:Fest.

Tickets for this event are only £5 for DMU students and staff, £12 full price. Book your tickets here or get them on the door, open at 19.30 (cash only).
