[Extra]Ordinary Portraits is a collection of thirty portraits, by young people across the UK, that reveal the 'extraordinary elements of seemingly ordinary people'
To mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD), The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) partnered with The Royal Drawing School to launch the [Extra]Ordinary Portraits competition, which asked young people (25 and under) across the UK to learn about someone affected by the Holocaust, genocide or identity-based persecution and create a portrait of them. These portraits cover a wide range of topics, spanning from the Holocaust to examples of modern-day persecution.
An expert judging panel have chosen these thirty portraits to be displayed as the [Extra]Ordinary Portraits digital exhibition. The panel included acclaimed photographer Rankin; Antoinette Mutabazi, survivor of the genocide in Rwanda; Harry Parker, Deputy Director of The Royal Drawing School; Gideon Summerfield, artist; Tulip Siddiq MP and Olivia Marks-Woldman OBE, CEO of HMDT.
Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) and The Royal Drawing School
HMDT is the charity established and funded by the UK Government to promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) in the UK. HMD is the international day on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and during more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The Royal Drawing School is an independent charity established by HRH King Charles with artist Catherine Goodman in 2000. It is one of only a few institutions offering in-depth, quality tuition for those who wish to develop their observational drawing skills.
