Christmas Lights Switch-On

The most wonderful time of the year kicks off on Thursday 21 November with Leicester’s Christmas Lights Switch-On.

The city's streets will be illuminated with over 16,000 sparkling lights and a spectacular tree, with 2,000 lights and 900 baubles, will take centre stage at the Clock Tower.

Family, friends, and loved ones once again flock to the city centre to gather at Humberstone Gate for the official lights switch-on and a fantastic programme of stage entertainment from 5pm onwards, with live music and entertainment.

BBC Radio Leicester Jimmy and Summaya will be our hosts for the evening along with Blue’s Antony Costa - Abanazar and Martin Ballard - Widow Twankey from De Montfort Hall Christmas pantomime Aladdin.

They will be joined on the Humberstone Gate stage by Father Christmas and the Lord Mayor for the big switch-on, along with music & entertainment from 4th Avenue and The Platforms.

Over on New Market Square, enjoy an award-winning selection of street food & drinks with A Christmas Canteen - Lights Switch On plus a free outdoor screening at 4.30pm of Christmas favourite, Elf. Open from midday to 10.30pm, It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends and family throughout the day.

Town Hall Square will host the year’s enchanting Woodland Tales Christmas tableau plus traditional nativity scene with music from brass bands and street artists to add to the festive atmosphere.

Head over to Highcross Leicester for Winter Galactical and see a festive future up in lights, with electrifying acts and spirited performances. Catch Titan the Robot, Interstellar Storm and Britain's Got Talent finalists Boogie Storm.

Leicester Park & Ride

 Park & Ride services will run later into the evening to make it easier for families to travel into the city for the big switch-on.

The Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse services, which are jointly run by Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council, will run every 15 minutes until 8.30pm, with the last buses out of the city centre departing at 9pm.

Group tickets are just £4 for up to five people travelling together in the same car. All sites have free parking and free Wi-Fi is available on all buses.
