Our talk looks at the careers of two of Leicestershire's most prominent members during the English Civil War.
Sir Arthur Haselrig of Noseley Hall was a leader of the Parliamentary opposition to Charles I and one of the Five Members whose attempted arrest sparked the 1642-1646 First English Civil War. He held various military and political posts during the 1639-1651. He formed the only heavy cavalry regiment nicknamed the 'Lobsters' during the war.
Thomas Grey, Lord Grey of Groby was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the forces of the Parliament in the Midland Counties and Governor of Leicester, fighting throughout the surrounding counties. He was the only person of nobility to sign King Charles' death warrant.
