About

6,000 Lights: The Story of Diwali in Leicester

Leicester has what is regarded as one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India, but the festival had very humble origins back in the 1960's.

The exhibition explores why Leicester has this spectacular festival and the people, organisations and events that have made it happen. Local people have shared their memories and photographs to create a unique record of how Leicester's Festival of Lights has been celebrated through the decades.

You can view the History of Diwali in Leicester at storyofleicester.info/Diwali

The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Records Office has also got a rich archive of Diwali magazines and Diwali guides which have been produced over the years by the communities of Leicester and by Leicester City Council.
