• Uncover the story - Melton Mowbray has been referred to as the ‘Monaco’ of England. It was extremely popular for foxhunting and many manor houses were built around the town as weekend hunting lodges by the country’s gentry, including Scalford Hall in 1908. The Hall was perfectly positioned to take advantage of the world-famous Leicestershire hunts. The original stables and kennels for the horses and hounds can still be seen. <hr> In the 1930s the house was purchased by Colonel Colman, of the Colman’s Mustard family. His photograph can be found in the Drawing Room or ‘Colman Room’. The Colonel and his wife were friends of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, who regularly rode with the local hunts. In 1931, whilst on a visit to the area, the Prince of Wales met Mrs Wallis Simpson and throughout their much-publicised courtship were regular visitors at Scalford Hall. The large carved stone fireplace by the grand staircase was a gift from the Prince to Colonel Colman. <hr> Anyone who has played a game of Cluedo will know of Colonel Mustard. Rumour has it that the game took its inspiration from the Hall’s rooms and the guests who stayed here. <hr> The Hall is now a delightful country house hotel set among eight acres of carefully landscaped gardens in the heart of the Leicestershire countryside, just five minutes from the famous market town of Melton Mowbray. This is a hotel full of individual character in a beautiful setting. One of the highlights is taking Afternoon Tea in the Drawing Room whilst looking out over the grounds. The hotel offers a quality dining experience in the Peacock Restaurant with dishes prepared in-house using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients
