• Uncover the story - Leicester’s Holiday Inn, a landmark building standing on its very own island, is a monument to progress and change. The land on which it was built was originally the Roman and medieval heart of Leicester, its old narrow streets eventually cleared in the late 60s to make way for the city’s modern central ring road. The hotel itself, built in 1969, stands on the site of a Roman temple. Leicester’s Holiday Inn was the UK’s first Holiday Inn hotel and was opened by Sir Mark Henig, the first Chairman of the English Tourist Board (now Visit Britain).
Its location in the Old Town area of Leicester means the Holiday Inn makes the perfect base for exploring some of Leicester’s 2,000-year history, some of which can be seen from its upper floors. Many of the city’s most important historical monuments can be found in this area including the Roman Jewry Wall, the medieval St Nicholas Church, Leicester Castle and St Mary de Castro, the iconic Guildhall and Newarke Gateway. The area is full of heritage centres including Newark Houses Museum, The Guildhall and the King Richard III Visitor Centre and Cathedral which tell the story of the discovery of King Richard III beneath a city car park.
Just a short walk away are yet more historical buildings that have become quality restaurants and bars including Wygston’s House, Middletons Steak House, Café Bruxelles, Cosy Club, The Globe and 1573 Bar & Grill.
There is nothing old about the Holiday Inn though. Refurbished in 2018, guests can enjoy elegant contemporary bedrooms, a gym and a stylish restaurant, bar and lounge with added touches of luxury throughout. Back in the 1960s hotel rooms were much larger so the hotel offers some of the most spacious accommodation in the city, including rooms with two double beds.
