About

Leicester Lions Speedway

The Lions are a professional speedway team that race in the Championship against ten other clubs situated throughout the UK.

The Lions race their home meetings at the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena on Beaumont Park in Leicester during the season that begins in March through to September when the top four teams in the league table go forward to the play-offs to determine the league champions.

Teams are made up of seven riders and a league match consists of fifteen heats. A race comprises of two riders from each team which are over four laps. It is all out speed over the duration of the fifteen races as riders jostle for the lead to score points for their team.

If a rider wins a race he will earn his team 3 points; if he comes second he will receive 2 points; third and he will only gain 1 point and if he comes last he won't get anything!

A race lasts approximately 60 seconds on the 300 metre circuit and the sport is the most exciting and breath-taking one minute of action available. The atmosphere builds from the moment the four riders emerge from the Pits lane to the waving of the chequered flag.

Marvel at the skill of the four competitors as they flash past you at high speed which generates an air of awe from people watching. It is a phenomenon that no other sport can bring and a lasting memory of a night out at Leicester Speedway.

Speedway is a unique motorised team sport that is fast, furious and great family entertainment. The bikes have no brakes, just one gear, a clutch and a 500cc engine which can accelerate to 60 mph, faster than a Formula 1 car.

The best part of watching a meeting at Leicester is the closeness to the action from all parts of the terracing or covered seated grandstands, each offering uninterrupted views of the whole circuit.

Each team will wear its club colours with Leicester identifiable in red and yellow race suits. The Lions team consists of one Australian and six English riders and are captained by Scott Nicholls a seven-time British Individual Champion. The charismatic Nicholls, who is renowned for his highly colourful tailored shirts, is an analyst on the BT Sport channels during their live transmissions of the season long Speedway Grand Prix competition.

Saturday’s are the Lions normal race night with a start-time of 7.30pm with occasional Sunday afternoon’s fixtures. Children sixteen and under are admitted free with a paying adult and meetings usually last up to two hours. There is car parking at the stadium and refreshments within the venue.

After the meeting the riders from both teams are easily accessible to see and meet, so don't forget your cameras, autograph books and pens!
