This summer we hosted our first ever social media takeover with one of our favourite local influencers. Lauren from @laureninleicester has become known for her fun and informative posts about living in Leicester and showcasing great family activities.
She’s someone who has lived in the city her whole life, and it was only after returning from travelling that she realised just what our fair city (and county) has to offer and she has dedicated herself to showcasing what’s best about Leicester and Leicestershire, with a particular focus on activities for young families!
We gave her the keys to our social media for the week and she did a fantastic job, dashing all around Leicestershire to sample some of the best family activities. Her first port of call was Ferneley’s Farm, an attraction that’s part of our Fitcation and Taste the Place campaigns. Her little one loved the playgrounds and mini golf (not to mention their amazing ice cream!)
The next stop was a tour of Leicester’s cultural offerings. Newarke Houses Museum is a favourite of generations of Leicester folk and this summer there’s an exhibition charting the history of play, which is perfect for your little ones. She also took a trip to the Curve theatre for The Tiger Who Came To Tea, there’s always a great family show on offer there, and to the Phoenix cinema who has a special summer offer for families, with kids food discount and cheap tickets.
A trip to the farm to see the animals is always a favourite for the summer months and she popped over to Loughborough (well, nearby Mountsorrel actually) to Stonehurst Farm, with its lovely animals, farm shop and café, and it’s also the supplier for, and the location of Leicestershire’s only Michelin starred restaurant John’s House.
Next on the itinerary was Conkers, a fantastic attraction right in the heart of the National Forest which tells the industrial history of the region but also has some amazing outdoor and indoor activities for the kids. From high ropes, immersive exploration, soft play areas and barefoot walk plus loads of craft areas, it’s the perfect family day out.
Twinlakes is the ultimate family day out, with rides, a farm and petting zoo, water park and loads more. Just reaching its 20th birthday and full of fantastic fun, with character appearances and special events, this 70 acre theme park is a great day out.
Now you might not think about Belvoir Castle as a family day out, but they’ve got loads there for the kids, whether it’s the trails they put on at certain times of years, the discovery areas in the Castle itself, or their brand new adventure playground, which was voted one of the best by The Times.
And finally, what better way to conclude her takeover than by getting lost in the Leicestershire countryside. Lauren and family checked out Wistow Maze, which is one of our best kept secrets and open all summer long. Bigger than Hampton Court maze, you can explore the three miles of paths and then play on the kids area at the end. Then finish your day with ice cream and cake from the café at the Wistow Rural Centre across the road.
Thanks again to Lauren for all her help and for being such a great sport in showing off Leicestershire’s best family attractions.
