In See & Do

The build up to Christmas in Leicester is probably most exciting for all of us. Whether you’re young or old, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. From shopping for gifts to selecting decorations, there are so many ways to get into the Christmas spirit so, why not join us in Leicester and see what we have in store for the season.

Here in Leicester we have many ways of getting into the festive spirit! From our holiday ice rink to the wheel of light; you name it we have it! So come along as we kick off the season with our ho – ho – ho Christmas Lights Switch on.

Taking place on Thursday 23 November, Leicester’s Christmas Light Switch-On offers a fantastic programme of stage entertainment, with live music, including The Paradimes closing the show.

But the fun doesn’t stop there…

Don’t forget you have the opportunity to ‘Be Our Guest’ at Visit Leicester Information Centre, where you can meet the stars of De Montfort Hall’s Beauty and the Beast and pick up a goodie bag.

Frostival at Highcross Leicester will include live ballet performances

And what better way to add to the winter feeling than going along to Highcross Leicester for Frostival? Expect nothing less than the frostiest and most captivating atmosphere, with elegant ballerinas emerging from an icy mist to recreate the romantic scenes of Tchaikovsky's famous Swan Lake Ballet.

Fairy-tale lovers will also love this year’s Christmas tableaux in Town Hall Square – the White Witch, Aslan and the land of mythical creatures will be brought to life in this Narnia themed display. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled in the city centre as you might spot the characters from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on Thursday 23 November.

Grab a glass of mulled wine at Leicester's Christmas Market

Don’t forget, Leicester’s Christmas Market will be welcoming visitors for the first time – so be sure stop by the city’s New Market Square and find a special gift, or just soak up the atmosphere with a hot drink.

With an array of gorgeous gifts, quirky crafts, perfect presents and festive family fun, the unique market will be featuring around forty stalls of artisan gifts, fabulous food, drinks and tasty treats from all around the world!

Don’t worry about travelling on the day either. Get straight into the city on 23 November using the extended Leicester Park and Ride service – the last buses will leave the city centre at 9pm.

Or leave your car at home and make the most of public transport deals after 4.30pm: children travel free on Arriva buses within the Leicester ZoneOne area, and First Bus are offering £5 return tickets for groups of 5 people.

Easy transport makes it the perfect opportunity to start your Christmas shopping, and all the more reason to stay for drinks, dinner and a late night ride on the Wheel of Light. If you're coming from further afield check out our Travel into Leicester page.

Don’t forget the Jubilee Square Ice Rink will be opening on 9 Dec, book your tickets in advance to guarantee your slot on the ice! Book them online or stop by the Visit Leicester Information Centre.
